SoftBank Group Corp. Integrates ESG into Investment Process
Adding evaluation criteria for environmental and social initiatives in addition to governance
SoftBank Group Corp.(“SBG”) announced that it revised in May 2021 its “Portfolio Company Governance and Investment Guidelines Policy” which originally set forth the criteria for investees’ corporate governance in the SoftBank Group (“the Group”)’s investment process to assess risks and opportunities arising from environmental and social factors in addition to governance in both pre-investment evaluation and post-investment monitoring. The revision was made based on the belief that consideration to E (Environment), S (Social) and G (Governance) is essential for the Group's mid- to long-term growth.
This revision applies to SBG and its unlisted investment subsidiaries ("Investment Management Subsidiaries"), including the management company of SoftBank Vision Fund, in order to enhance the sustainability of investment activities, improve long-term returns and reduce risks as a strategic investment holding company engaged in investment activities globally. SBG aims to achieve mid-to long-term growth of the Group by developing and implementing an evaluation process for material environmental and social factors while taking into account the business nature of the portfolio companies in each Investment Management Subsidiary.
Yoshimitsu Goto, Board Director, Corporate Officer, Senior Vice President, CFO, CISO & CSusO (Chief Sustainability Officer), SoftBank Group Corp., said:
"With this revision, we have made it clear that we integrate all perspectives of ESG into our investment evaluation. We believe that encouraging our portfolio companies to engage in ESG initiatives will also lead to an increase in the value of assets held over the mid- to long-term. Going forward, we will continue to strengthen ESG initiatives throughout the Group by carrying out more detailed studies on a set of processes from pre-investment evaluation to post-investment monitoring and annual evaluation.”
The SoftBank Group integrates ESG elements into its investment evaluation process to achieve sustainable growth and further enhance corporate value.
