SoftBank Group Corp. Achieves Carbon Neutrality in Fiscal 2020 Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Its Business Activities to Virtually Zero
Accelerates efforts to set climate-related targets for the entire group
SoftBank Group Corp. ("SBG") announced that it has achieved Carbon Neutrality in fiscal year 2020, reducing greenhouse gas emissions*1 from its business activities to virtually zero, and sets course to go Carbon Neutral continuously.
The majority of SBG’s greenhouse gas emissions are from electricity use at the office. SBG relocated its head office building in January 2021, installing energy-saving technologies such as LED lighting with motion sensors for automatic brightness adjustment, blinds with automatic open/close functions, and using electricity generated by rooftop solar panels. These are part of SBG's effort to reduce electricity consumption and shift to renewable energy-derived electricity. In fiscal year 2020, SBG achieved Carbon Neutrality through these initiatives towards greenhouse gas emissions cut, together with the use of carbon offset scheme*2 for the remaining emissions.
Having set out its Sustainability Vision of ”Help shape the next 300 years for our future generations and the planet,” SBG is taking action to reduce the environmental impact of its business activities based on a recognition that maintenance and preservation of the global environment underlie the SoftBank Group (“the Group”)’s sustainability and growth. In particular, to address climate change which is a pressing global challenge, SBG is committed to realizing a decarbonized society through actions including the consistent achievement of Carbon Neutrality in its business activities.
Furthermore, as a part of its group-wide response to climate change, SBG plans to identify risks and opportunities, proceed with scenario analysis, and set climate-related targets for the entire group in accordance with the framework of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD). As a vital step forward, SBG is now reinforcing collaborative interaction with its Group companies, actively sharing information and exchanging views covering topics such as the amount of greenhouse gas emissions by each company and the adoption of renewable energy.
Guided by its corporate philosophy of "Information Revolution—Happiness for everyone," the SoftBank Group will continue to strengthen its ESG initiatives with the aim of enhancing sustainability and corporate value.
